MANSFIELD, Ohio —
Richland County’s Ohio Bird Sanctuary is a perfect weekend getaway for some hands-on learning about our feathered friends.
It sits on 72 acres of land and features several cages and exhibits, where visitors can get a personal experience.
“One of the big delights for the children is to walk in here with a cup of worms purchased in our visitor center and actually feed the birds,” said employee Jan Ferrell.
The sanctuary features both native Ohio species, and non-native species.
“We have a bard owl, a barn owl, great horned owl, peregrine falcon, a couple of red tailed hawks,” Ferrell said.
But there is one thing all the birds at the sanctuary have in common. They have been injured or have conditions that make them unable to live in the wild. Employees at the sanctuary nurse them back to health.
“As large as our rehab facility is, we’re even larger into education. We teach kids how valuable birds are to their environment,” said Ferrell.
There are several different tour packages available for visitors. For more information, go to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary Web site.
